When the virus appears on the surface of the skin, it is called “shedding”, the virus is active, and this is when it is the most contagious to others through direct contact with the infected area. Sometimes it is actually hard to tell when it is shedding, because often there are no visible signs, or none that can be seen.

This is what is often referred to as asymptomatic shedding, and while you may see nothing, it can still be passed from person to person through contact like kissing and so on.

Believe it or not, everyone will have some type of herpes infection at one time or another. The most common type would be the one that appears on the face, usually near or in the mouth, and are what we would call a “cold sore.”

This is a form of Herpes Simplex, the most common form of viral infection. They are also referred to as fever blisters, but in spite of the name, they are one and the same. Some people mistakenly think that they have chapped lips or a bug bite on the face.

Some of the symptoms are easily recognized because they are quite visible, while other times the herpes virus may be confused with something else entirely. It can appear as a tiny sore often confused with a pimple, a red patch of skin, or it may even look like an ingrown hair. Some people think that they just have an irritated patch of skin, and do nothing about it.

Genital herpes can appear anywhere below the waist in certain areas. It will appear as a blister-like sore that will scab over before it begins to heal. It can be seen on the scrotum, the penis, in and around the vagina, or as an irritation near or on the anus. Some people think that they have hemorrhoids, when in fact, they have the herpes virus.

Vaginal itching may be noticed, and confused with a yeast infection. The virus is most contagious during these periods of shedding. An uninfected person has a 75% risk factor of contracting herpes from an infected sexual partner. That is why it is so important to wear a condom during sex if you know you are infected, and to always let your partner know that you have the herpes virus.

Once the herpes virus invades the immune system, it will appear to “hide” in the cells of the nerve roots in certain areas in the body. It may stay hidden for long periods, and then become active and begin to shed again. This often happens repeatedly throughout a person’s life. Once you have contracted the virus, you will never get rid of it. It is something that you will always have.

There are medications you can take to prevent an outbreak, but you will always have to be cautious about having a relationship or any sexual activity to avoid exposing someone to the virus. Taking proper precautions should protect them from infection.

Breast cancer is the leading cause of cancer death in women in the U.S. Accordingly to the Centers for Disease Control, the incidence of breast cancer increased 52 percent between 1950 and 1990. Breast cancer incidence has now risen to become the most frequently diagnosed cancer in women, 175,000 cases annually, accounting for over 40,000 deaths yearly.

What has caused this dramatic rise in the rate of breast cancer among women? Many doctors maintain that unopposed estrogen is responsible for at least 30 to 35 percent of breast cancers. Other doctors put the incidence even higher.

Estrogen levels in America today are higher than in other countries. Estrogen is secreted in substantial amounts not only by the ovaries but also by the adrenal glands in the form of androstenedione. Doctors prescribe estrogen for many different conditions at many difference stages and ages in a woman’s life—for menstrual problems; PMS, birth control, infertility, and menopausal symptoms.

A large number of chemicals we encounter in our daily lives; pesticides, solvents, detergents and plastics, contain estrogen. We live in an estrogen-saturated environment, which is a source of additional unwanted and unneeded estrogen. Through and from these products estrogenic substances enter our living cells, building up over time.

Johns Hopkins Medical school followed two study groups of women for 20 years. The results of the study were published in the American Journal of Epidemiology in 1981. Women in the low progesterone group were compared to women with normal progesterone levels. In women with low progesterone the occurrence of breast cancer was 5.4 times greater than in women with normal progesterone levels. Stated another way, the incidence of breast cancer in the low progesterone group was over 80 percent greater than in the normal progesterone group.

Breast duct cell hyperplasia-increased rate of cell growth in breast duct cells is recognized as a major risk factor for breast cancer. In a 1995 study published in the journal Fertility and Sterility, researchers performed a double-blind randomized study examining the use of topical natural progesterone cream and a topical estrogen to determine breast duct cell growth. Women using progesterone cream had dramatically reduced cell multiplication rates. Women using estrogen had significantly higher cell multiplication rates.

We live in a society saturated with estrogen. Combined with the natural fall in progesterone levels that all women experience, the result is all women are in danger of estrogen excess. It is not mere coincidence that breast cancer occurs in women with high estrogen levels and low progesterone levels.

The scientific facts are indisputable. Breast cancer is caused to a great extend by excessive, unopposed levels of estrogen. Progesterone has been shown to step cells from multiplying and when progesterone cream is applied to breast cysts, they usually disappear within three to four months.

It is very clear indeed that progesterone cream is protective against breast cancer. Natural progesterone cream can be applied or massaged directly into the skin anywhere where it’s thin or soft, the neck inner arms, back of the elbows, flat of the stomach, back of the knees, and directly onto the breasts. Progesterone cream permeates the skin and gets into the blood stream.

Today, all of us have involved ourselves in the rat race of money and considerably neglected our health. We have adopted a very poor lifestyle coupled with hustle and bustle of the modern world. Mind it neck pain and back pain are not just normal symptoms that can be neglected and especially if it is persistent and does not subside with rest.
Most of the times neck pain and back pain are cause of stress and wrong posture but many of times it can be symptom of varied other serious conditions as well.

Some other common causes of back pain are excessive lifting, back muscle injury, disc disorders, strained ligaments etc. But most commonly it’s our poor posture and wrong adoption of sitting habits that gives birth to back pain.

It started charging me when I started my work as a writer and would spend prolonged hours in front of the computer screen and by the end of the day my head would be literally pounding away. Like you even I used to apply some gel and pop a pill and would resume work. But I became worried when my pain started becoming worsened and more frequent. I had no option but to consult the doctor and I’m glad that I did as I discovered the root causes.

It’s good to work on the computer but in the proper manner. The most prime thing is the office equipment. Comfortable office chairs and desks allow individuals to work for long hours without any back pain symptoms. But the problem does not end here. Most of us get comfortable chairs with back rests, but do not use it all. It’s very vital to use the back rest while working on the computer. Proper back rest keeps the back up right straight and does not mount pressure on it.

And secondly work is important for everyone, but so is health. It’s very difficult to squeeze in time for exercises and fitness activities, but unless health is perfect how long will you will be able to continue with your work. Mind it I’m not asking you to spend hours at gyms and fitness centers, but some general initiatives will make all the difference.

Try getting up from the chair in between the works, stretch your body, take a stroll around the home, drink some cool water and resume work after 10 minutes break. If possible try taking 1 hour rest, this soothes the back and as well the mind. Try going for a brisk walk, go for swimming or cycling. Moreover make it a habit to get up from your workstation when you are engaged in something else. As in when you are eating or talking over the phone. These breaks might consume some precious time of yours but ultimately they help in increasing the productively.

And despite of these measures, if the back pain and neck pain are refusing to subside, please consult a physician and take an advice.

Those with myopia see near objects clearly but far away objects appear blur.

Classification:

Myopia has been classified in various manners.

By Cause:

•Axial myopia: an increase in the eye’s axial length.

•Refractive myopia: condition of the refractive elements of the eye.

Curvature myopia: excessive, or increased, curvature of one or more of the refractive surfaces of the eye, especially the cornea.

Index myopia: variation in the index of refraction of one or more of the ocular media.

By Clinical Entity:

•Simple myopia: optically too powerful for its axial length.

•Degenerative myopia/ malignant/ pathological/progressive myopia: characterized by marked fundus changes, such as posterior staphyloma, and associated with a high refractive error.

•Nocturnal myopia /night myopia or twilight myopia: is a condition in which the eye has a greater difficulty seeing in low illumination areas.

•Pseudo myopia: blurring of distance vision brought about by spasm of the ciliary muscle.

•Induced myopia/acquired myopia: results from exposure to various pharmaceuticals, increases in glucose levels, nuclear sclerosis, or other anomalous conditions.

•Index myopia: variation in the index of refraction of one or more of the ocular media.

•Form deprivation myopia: eyesight is deprived by limited illumination and vision range, or the eye is modified with artificial lenses or deprived of clear form vision.

•Nearwork Induced Transient Myopia (NITM): defined as short-term myopia. Far point shift immediately following a prolonged near visual task.

By Degree:

•Low myopia: -3.00 diopters or less (i.e. closer to 0.00).

•Medium myopia: Between -3.00 and -6.00 diopters.

•High myopia: -6.00 diopters or more.

By Age of onset:

•Congenital myopia/infantile myopia, is present at birth and persists through infancy.

•Youth onset myopia occurs prior to age 20.

•School myopia appears during childhood. Due to the use of the eyes for close work.

•Adult onset myopia

•Early adult onset myopia occurs between ages 20 and 40.

•Late adult onset myopia occurs after age.

Signs and Symptoms:

•Blurry distance vision

•Vision seems clearer when squinting

•Eyestrain

•Headaches

Contact a Medical Professional:

Call if your child shows these signs

•Having difficulty reading the blackboard in school or signs on a wall.

•Holding books very close when reading.

•Sitting close to the television.

•Flashing lights

•Floating spots

•Sudden loss of any part of the field of vision.

Detection and Diagnosis:

•Measurement of the pressure of fluid in the eyes.

•Refraction test, to determine the correct prescription for glasses.

•Retinal examination

•Slit-lamp exam of the structures at the front of the eyes

•Test of color vision, to look for possible color blindness

•Tests of the muscles that move the eyes

•Visual acuity, both at a distance (Snellen), and close up

Treatment:

The treatment for nearsightedness depends on several factors such as the patient’s age, activities, and occupation. Vision can corrected with glasses, contacts, or surgery. Refractive procedures such as LASIK can be considered for adults when the prescription has remained stable for at least one year.

Christine Crotts

In today’s world we are constantly faced with information about infectious diseases, infection control and disease prevention. We are all aware of the methods that we should apply to prevent the spread of infectious disease, such as washing of hands with antibacterial soap, using hand sanitizer, disinfectant spray and wipes as well as mouth covers. We are all aware of how to prevent infectious diseases, but we may not all be aware of what it is that we are avoiding. Lets look at the four of the most common infectious diseases in North America.

Chicken Pox (Varicella Zoster Virus)

Chicken Pox is generally considered being a children’s illness, but the truth is that Chicken pox is that in recent years, chicken pox has become more prevalent in adults and teenagers. This disease can be transmitted via direct contact with an infected person. Infection can be prevented by avoiding contact with an infected individual during the virulent stag of infection. Common infectious disease prevention techniques are extremely effective in the prevention of Chicken Pox, and a vaccine is available which can help to prevent infection.

Strep Throat (Streptococcal Pharyngitis)

Strep Throat is a particularly common infectious disease which is indicative of swollen tonsils, Difficulty swallowing, Malaise, general discomfort, feeling ill, Fever, Fever Headache, Chills, Ear pain Hives, Bumps, bruises, inflammation, or swelling on the side of the neck. Infection occurs by direct contact with an infected person. Common prevention techniques are useful to a point, but the best prevention is to avoid all contact with the infected person until the fever period has ended.

Hepatitis

Hepatitis is one of the most common infectious diseases in North America. Hepatitis comes in three main forms, all of which are caused by related viruses. The most common form of hepatitis is Hepatitis A, this is most often seen in its acute form, and usually lasts for less than six months from primary infection. Hepatitis A is also the main cause of liver disease worldwide, with Hepatitis C following closely behind. Treatments for Hepatitis are Dependent on the strain of virus that is the key acting virus of the infection. Prevention via common infectious diseases management techniques is highly effective. Infection depends on the particular virus of exposure.

Pneumonia

Pneumonia is a disease that can affect either one or both of the lungs on a person. This results in the inflammation of the lungs, along with the lungs filling up with fluid. There are several causes that can be linked back to the catching of pneumonia. Some of the more common causes of this condition include breathing in of bacteria, fungi or a virus. When a person has pneumonia, there are several symptoms that are related to a person who has this type of infectious disease. These symptoms include a cough, accompanied with chest pain and difficulty in their breathing. Many people who develop pneumonia have to be hospitalized in order to effectively treat this condition. Many times however, this can be treated with antibiotics that your doctor will prescribe for you.

Breast cancer is one of the leading killer cancers for women. There is as much need for the cure for breast cancer as the need for emotional bolstering. Everyone needs to educate themselves about this disease.

What is breast cancer?

This is a type of cancer that begins in the breast cells. It is more common in women, but can also happen to men. Women between ages 45 and 55 are more prone to this disease.

What are the symptoms?

The first tell-tale symptoms are a lump that can be felt in that area that is different from the tissues that comprise the breast. There might also be changes in the size and appearance of the breast. It might look dimply with inverted nipples that have fluid discharges.

If there is an inflammation, there might be pain, a warm sensation, redness and swelling in that area.

What are the causes?
In truth there are many factors that can trigger this. Age seems to play a key role, especially to the women past the childbearing age. Other than that, factors such as gender, hormones, diet, obesity, radiation can contribute to the progress of this disease.

Genetics also play a vital role. Those who have a history of this disease in their family are more likely to develop it after the childbearing age.

What are the treatments?
There are many clinical treatments used to treat this condition. Depending on the stage of this disease, your doctor may prescribe you with a series of treatments. It also follows a series of medications.

ILT or Interstitial laser thermotherapy is a new method today that can treat this problem without surgically removing it. Another treatment is with the use of radiation therapy which can destroy the cancer cells. It inhibits the development of the bad cells in the future by 50 to 66%.

Many women have not singled out the treatments for this disease. They have tried many different ways to help them with their condition. Natural cure for breast cancer is one of these alternative treatments.

First, try to adapt a non-carcinogenic diet. There have been many reliable accounting that reports an almost miraculous healing on their health. These women have been eating more fruits and vegetables rather than meaty and fatty foods.

Supplementing with vitamins and minerals has also been proven effective. Ingesting omega-3 supplements has been very effective in either keeping the cancer cells at bay or inhibiting its growth.
Omega-3 essential fatty acids DHA and EPA can be taken from fishes. They are the most abundant source of these nutrients so it is a big help to take fish oil supplements.

There are herbal remedies that are purported to help this problem as well. Dong quai, for one, can help normalize the production of hormones. Black Cohosh has similar benefits.

To help women live a better quality life, there is a natural product that can supplement lost energy. This product is called Fatigue Fighter.

This product can improve the vivacity and the strength of a person suffering from this disease. It can also improve the health of the immune system to hinder the possibility of complications. This product will enable the person to still perform well physically without feeling fatigued.

This is safe to use because it only uses natural ingredients such as Siberian Ginseng, olive leaf extract and centella asiatica.

With all the success stories of women who have tried natural treatments, I think experts should consider doing a bit more research on this method instead of always finding severe methods to kill the cancer cells.

The cure for breast cancer is extensive. It is important to keep an open heart and mind over the many possible treatments that can send you on your way to recovery.

An inguinal hernia is the medical name for what happens when there is a weakness or tear in the groin area that allows part of the intestines to protrude through the abdominal wall. While the condition may or may not be painful, it will usually result in a visible lump forming around the groin area. Sometimes, the hernia will only be painful when the person moves into different positions with their body, such as sitting up.

Some people will notice this lump come and go for a period of days or weeks before they finally decide to visit their doctor to get it diagnosed. It is only then that they find out for sure that they have an inguinal hernia. At that time, the doctor and patient will schedule a time for surgery, if the doctor deems that surgery is necessary.

If this describes you, here are some tips for before and after surgery:

Before surgery:

Remember to prepare yourself, your friends, family and your home in the days before your surgery. This includes alerting people you know, including friends and co-workers, that your surgery date is coming up and that you might not be as responsive as usual for the first few days after surgery. In other words: you will want to manage their expectations.

Buy any healthy snacks you may need. And, get yourself something to do, like magazines, games, books and DVDs, so that you can pass the time with as little boredom as possible.

Here is what to expect after inguinal hernia surgery.

1. The first day after surgery, you will likely want to stay in bed. Restricting movement is a good idea, and your doctor will usually prescribe strong painkillers for use during this time.

2. You will need to avoid heavy lifting of any kind for at least 2-3 weeks after the surgery. Otherwise, you could risk re-opening the incision that the surgeons created.

3. On Day 2 or Day 3, make sure you are spending most of your time OUT of bed. Yes, contrary to what may feel intuitively true, you actually need to keep your body in motion each day after surgery. If you just stay in bed for days or weeks after surgery, you are not giving the muscles around your incision that chance to get stronger. People who have tried not to move at all for a week or more after hernia surgery often report problems of persistent pain and/or re-opening their wound because they had failed to give the muscles a chance to strengthen.

4. As the days pass, you will find yourself needing the heavy painkillers less and less. Your doctor may suggest that you switch to acetaminophen or a similar, over-the-counter painkiller at that point.

5. Make sure you keep your wound clean in the days and weeks following surgery. Your wound may weep, which means that it could seep fluids for a few days. This should stop, however. If it persists, call your doctor.

6. It is okay to take a shower starting a couple of days after your surgery. In the meantime, keep the area around your wound clean with a sponge or washcloth.

Hernia surgery is a serious thing, but it is something from which you will definitely recover. To recovery as quickly and painlessly as possible – and with the lowest-possible chance of recurrence – follow these tips. And, get well soon!

Diabetes is a silent disease. If it goes undetected, it can become a life threatening disease. People have been known to have their legs amputated due to diabetes. Why is this so? It is simply due to the fact that people are not able to identify the possible diabetic symptoms. Just try asking some people about diabetes and you will be surprised with the answer.

I know because my aunt was one such casualty of diabetes. You see, she was diabetic but did not know about it. Not realizing that she was diabetic, she continued eating whatever she liked. There was no diet because of her ignorance. When she developed a sore in her right leg, not knowing that a diabetic had to take additional care where wounds or injuries are concerned, she ignored it as she thought it would heal itself. After all it was just a small sore. It did not go away, and instead, the sore in her leg became a bigger wound. It was later that she decided to visit a doctor. However, it was too late as the wound developed into gangrene. She had to have her leg amputated. Though this happened in the late 1970’s, today in the 21st century, people are still as ignorant of diabetes as in the 1970s.

In most developed countries as well as in the third world countries, access to medical doctors are easier than in the 1970s. So there is no excuse whatsoever to be ignorant about this life-threatening disease. Also, there is always the library that a person can turn to for information on diabetes. If you are still unable to obtain the correct information on diabetes, then turn to the Internet to seek for more information. There are a number of websites on diabetes, ranging from diet to controlling diabetes. There is absolutely no excuse not to be well informed about diabetes.

You may ask why am I so concerned about diabetes? Let’s put it this way, ought not we be concerned about a silent killer? There has been a lot of publicity on other diseases such as cancer. But there is not much publicity on diabetes. Yes, I did say that there are a number of ways to obtain information on diabetes, but the publicity to make people more aware of diabetes is sadly insufficient. I believed that there should be more publicity to reach out to a larger crowd of people to educate them on the dangers of diabetes.

The problem with diabetes is that living in this modern world, we are bombarded with advertisement on the different types of food and beverages made available to us. As we consumed these processed food and beverages, guess what happened next? Our body system starts to react to the food and beverages. In processed food and beverages, manufacturers being concerned with the bottom line, will continue to add more refined sugar and salt to make the food and beverages tastier. Imagine, when someone kept on consuming all these stuff, especially if it is full of sugar! What will happen next? Our body will start to fail us. It would not be able to make use of the excess sugar and these will just be in our blood. I’m not talking only about the refined sugar. Almost at fault are food items such as refined rice and potatoes that will make our blood sugar rise faster and if not taken care of, will possibly result in diabetes.

The previous paragraph talks about food and beverage laden with sugar and refined carbohydrates. But there is another aspect to this. As we progressed as a modern society, we have lesser time for exercise. Of course, there will be some amongst us who are disciplined to continue with their exercise routine. This is not so for the majority of us. What will happen? Simply this, with the consumption of all those refined food and beverages, coupled with a lack of exercise, we will see more and more people suffering from diabetes. What makes it scary is that most will not be aware that diabetes is within striking distance of them.

So what is it that we, as individuals can do about it? I will list out a couple of steps here. In future, more will be outlined. Firstly, we need to find out our own genetic history. Trace back to your parents and grandparents. Check whether any of them had histories of diabetes. If no, then the chance of getting diabetes is reduced. I say only reduced because there is no guarantee that diabetes will not strike at a later stage. For those of you who are able to trace back your family history and discover that one of your parents or grandparents had diabetes, your chance of getting diabetes is increased. However, this is not the end of the world. There are many ways and means to avoid or delay the onset of diabetes.

The world is facing a serious flu threat in the form of swine flu. Currently human cases of swine flu have been reported from Mexico and the US. Swine flu was first reported in Mexico, where several people have died from the new strain of the influenza virus, so health authorities have been put on a high alert to prevent a pandemic like situation from occurring.

Swine flu is a respiratory disease that is caused by influenza A (H1N1) virus. Its main symptoms are similar to that of a seasonal flu like fever, coughing, lack of appetite, runny nose, nausea, sore throat, vomiting, and diarrhea.

Swine flu medication

Currently there is no vaccine available for the treatment of swine flu. However, doctors feel that popular anti-viral drugs such as Tamiflu and Relenza can prove useful for treatment as well as preventive purposes.

A popular prescription drug, Tamiflu, can help treat influenza type A infection, which includes swine flu. Not only this, it can also prevent the flu. The main ingredient in Tamiflu is oseltamivir, which stops the further spread of the virus in the body, providing it more immunity to fight back.

Tamiflu is available only on prescription, so to buy it, you need to go to a doctor for medical check-up. If the doctor approves and provides you with a valid prescription, then you can buy Tamiflu from any local licensed pharmacy. Another way to buy this drug is over the internet.

The doses of Tamiflu for treatment as well as prevention of flu can vary. Always follow the recommendations of your doctor or pharmacy. Generally, for treatment purposes, adults can take one capsule dose twice daily for five days. For prevention measures, they can take one capsule daily for 10 days.

Since Tamiflu is a prescription drug, patients who takes it are likely to suffer from some of its side effects such as nausea, vomiting, rash, abdominal pain, and sleep problems. It’s advisable for patients to take Tamiflu with food, as it can lower the intensity of these side effects. Remember, Tamiflu is a proven drug for flu treatment and proves beneficial for flu prevention too.

Another flu treatment called Relenza, contains the ingredients Zanamivir (5mg) and lactose (20 mg), which effectively treat influenza type A and B infections. This flu treatment comes in a powdered form, which is inhaled twice in a day for five days or at least once daily for up to 28 days.

Swine flu prevention

You can take Relenza for prevention purposes against flu infection, including swine flu. It prevents the further spread of flu virus in the body and strengthens the whole immune system.

Apart from taking any anti-viral medication, you can prevent swine flu infection by taking everyday preventive measures. First and foremost is to avoid a contact with an infected person. You should always try to keep a distance, and if he or she is your closest or dearest one, then use mask whenever you go nearer to that person.

Whenever you are sick due to flu infection, always stay at home to avoid spreading it While coughing or sneezing, always cover your mouth and nose with a tissue.

Be wise by maintaining good personal hygiene. Always wash your hands, as it protects you from germs. You should avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth, as it increases the possibility of spreading germs, if you have touched any contaminated surface.
