Martial arts self defense training isn’t just for young adults anymore. Elderly patients are enjoying the benefits of the centuries-old disciplines from Tae Kwon Do to Kung Fu to Karate. Experts say that when seniors and the elderly participate in programs learning martial arts moves, they actually help prevent osteoporosis. Seniors who already suffer from the condition can help reverse bone loss and learn to fall safely to prevent common injuries like broken bones.

Choosing the Right Training for Seniors

As a senior interested in the study of martial arts, your first step is to speak with your doctor about beginning a training program. The exercises can be rigorous, so it’s important to make sure that you are healthy enough to begin a training regimen.

Next, take some time to do a little research on the different kinds of martial arts self defense programs available to you. Look for one that seems like it would be enjoyable and beneficial. Once you have some idea of the discipline you want to try, begin searching for an instructor. You’ll want to find someone who meets your needs and requirements as an elderly student. After that, consider the pros and cons of each school and decide which training program is best for you.

There are several things to consider when you begin searching for an instructor. You need an excellent trainer who is well qualified in his or her field. Look for an instructor with plenty of experience training seniors. In many cases, it will be imperative that the martial arts moves you learn are modified to ensure your safety. Find an instructor you respect and who gives clear, precise instructions.

You should also visit the facility and make sure it’s in a safe location you can get to easily. If you live in an assisted living facility, you might want to check with your facility’s recreation director for programs available to you on campus. All training tools and equipment should be clean and safe. Don’t hesitate to ask questions if you have any concerns about the equipment you will be using.

Each martial arts self defense program is different and focuses on a different set of core values and principles. Ask your teacher about his or her teaching style and philosophy of learning to make sure the class is a good fit for your values and personality.

Finally, everything will come down to one question. Can you afford the training? Prices will be different for every school and every instructor. You can usually get price schedules online and do a little comparison shopping before you start your training. However, it might be necessary to call around first. Make a checklist to help you compare your options. Some training facilities will offer a special rate for persons over a certain age, so don’t forget to ask about senior discounts.

Martial arts self defense training is a great way for seniors to get exercise and build self-confidence.

Samuel Peterson

Everyone wants to be fit; everyone wants to have a great body. But in most cases, it doesn’t happen that easily and we end up blaming our “slow” metabolism for everything. However now your goal can actually be achieved, because there are ways in which you can kick start your metabolism. And they work!

Have a balanced meal for your breakfast

Problems usually arise when you end up eating too much for breakfast. Yes, studies do say that it is great to make breakfast the most important and biggest meal of the day but that doesn’t mean that you eat just about everything! What you need is a balanced meal. It is not that great an idea to consume too much of carbohydrates in the morning, because that slows down your metabolism rate and also makes you sleepy. Add more protein too your breakfast. In fact, you should start the morning by drinking a lot of water. Not only is this good for the digestive system, but also wakes up your body and prepares it for its first meal.

Load up on the snacks

Snacking throughout the day can be quite beneficial in keeping the metabolism rate high. Of course, by snacks we don’t mean bagels, popcorns or chips. Rather, you should snack on healthy things like cold cuts, juices, crackers or fruit. And instead of having 3 big meals in the day, you might consider having 6 smaller ones. This way your snacks too become semi scheduled. So basically, you should eat something after every 2 hours. This way neither will your metabolism slow down nor will you reach out for larger helpings during meal times.

Exercise

Exercise is a great way to jolt up the metabolism. It also helps in burning fat. Try to do at least some sort of activity that makes the heart rate go faster, perhaps a quick walk or jog or exercise bike. You can try other alternative like elliptical cross trainer and so on. Working out in the earlier part of the day, is better than working out in the night. However the crux of the matter is, whether it morning, noon or night, you must not skip your workout. In fact, it is even better if you schedule your workout according to your meal time. Eating within the first thirty minutes after exercising is essential in speeding up metabolism.

Be active during the afternoon

Afternoons can be quite a pain! The body feels lazy, and the mind feels sleepy which altogether can make you go into a slump. And this holds true even if you are in the office. So you need to spruce up the afternoon with more activities. Assign all your important work to the afternoon hours. This will ensure that you are more alert. The trick is to do anything that counters laziness. Also, this is the ideal time to treat yourself to some light snacks or perhaps even a chocolate. This will help in curbing your appetite and give your metabolism some boost.

Dinner should be light

Your body has less time to process food before you sleep and the digestive system is at its slowest. Therefore dinner should be smaller than lunch. Just before you sleep, have a glass of water.

Sometimes its just not the vitamins that help you fight off illness, there are quite a few unconventional ways to stay healthy.

Kissing

Well, I am sure you are surprised by this one. One kissing does have lots of benefits. It can help you in fighting off colds and flu. A lot of bacteria get exchanged during kissing which enhances the natural defenses of the body. This is in turn boosts the immune system. Same goes for having sex. It increases the production of immunoglobulin in our body, this is a protein that boosts immunity and keeps pathogens at bay. So go ahead, get some more action.

Turn on the music system

Listening to music can be beneficial. Hearing genres like soft rock, bluegrass or jazz for at least thirty minutes boost IgA proteins. This lowers the level of stress, which itself is a major inducer of illness. In fact, the production of IgA goes on even thirty minutes after the music has been turned off. So now might be the perfect time to make that CD compilation of your best tracks!

Walk briskly but do not run.

Walking really fast for about forty five minutes, four or more days a week also does wonders for your immune system. As a result, your sick days get minimized. However, take care not to run because overexertion can have the opposite effect. It can spiral your health down, particularly if you are already feeling unwell. So keep it brisk but not too fast.

Avoid blowing your nose

Everyone blows there nose when it is stuffy. But, do you know blowing too hard pushes mucus up into your sinuses? This can lead to you getting even sicker. Rather, you should gently blow your nose or take a decongestant. So next time, don’t give into the temptation of a hearty blow! Instead, gently blow one nostril first and then the other.

Get into the sauna

Sitting in a hot sauna can help in detoxing cold out of your system. And I can rightly say, most people will prefer the sauna any day over staying in with a cold. So next time you are muffled with a cold, go and hit the sauna.

Avoid dry air

Dry is a good breeding ground for flu and cold. Therefore, you should have humidifiers installed in your house. This will make it difficult for airborne diseases to breed in your house.

Drink hot liquids

Hold liquids help in washing the virus out of the mouth into the stomach. They can’t make much mischief there because the acids present in the stomach hamper their growth. So you should have more of tea, chicken soup and even coffee. You can also gargle with warm salty water; this goes a long way in derailing virus. The nose is another place which is an excellent breeding ground and incubator of flu. You could try nasal swabs with alcohol or a nasal flush to kill the virus before it does too much of harm.

And you thought only popping pills help?

Believe it or not, the body has no physiological need for a carbohydrate unlike it has for protein and fat. Despite this fact most of the population overeats these types of calories everyday because they are easily available and more convenient than some healthy alternatives. This daily habit contributes to an increased waistline and poor health. The drawback to the convenience food culture is the likelihood that the calories will be highly processed. Processed foods usually contain bad fats and artificial ingredients with loads of sugar.

There are two main problems concerning carbohydrates. The first problem is that most peoples total daily calorie intake comes from eating carbohydrates with hardly any protein and good fats in the diet. The second concern is that the bulk of these commonly consumed carbohydrates will almost be guaranteed to be processed and full of artificial sweeteners instead of natural carbohydrates found in vegetables and fruit.

Common foods that contain carbohydrates:
Breakfast cereals
Bread
Biscuits
Noodles
Pasta
Spaghetti
Jellies & jams
Ice cream
Cakes
Pies
Confectionary
Gravies & sauces
Beer
Wines
Fizzy drinks
Sugar

The quicker you learn which foods are carbohydrates and understand the impact they can have on insulin the quicker you will achieve fat loss with six pack abs and better health. If high levels of insulin are raised frequently and for long enough it contributes to diabetes, heart disease and aging.

The Reason Carbohydrates Can Be Bad For Fat Loss

When we consume food & drink our blood sugar rises and insulin is released to bring it back down to a normal range. This is done by pumping the sugar out of the blood and into the cells to be used for energy or stored for later. Fat has no impact on insulin and protein very little; carbohydrates have the greatest reaction on insulin release. When we eat any kind of carbohydrates they are converted into sugar in the body, the more carbohydrates eaten equals more blood sugar, which in turn means more insulin needed to pump the sugar out of the blood and into the cells.

Insulin is a storage hormone and if you don’t eat the right balance of foods at each meal you get a repetitive cycle of insulin release and fat storage. Eating carbohydrates by themselves will make the fat storing sequence worse. With this going on every mealtime other hormones (fat burning hormones) are inhibited and prevent you from losing fat and weight.

It doesn’t stop there; excess carbohydrates are not only bad for your waistline but bad for your health too. The more insulin released more bad cholesterol is produced. Insulin is the only hormone you can control and this is done with good eating habits.

Excessive insulin has got extensive research linking it to numerous diseases. Choose your carbohydrates wisely in future and always eat good quality protein and good fats with your meals. You will see fat melt from your abdominal area in no time.
